About

Quiet forested park in Cedar, south of Nanaimo, centered on Holden Lake and a rich marsh ecosystem. About 11 km of easy trails wind through second-growth Douglas fir, red alder, and big-leaf maple, with a viewing platform over the marsh roughly 1 km from the parking lot.

A favourite for birdwatchers — Trumpeter swans, Bald eagles, ducks, and beavers are commonly spotted. The lake also offers calm paddling and cutthroat trout fishing. The park was a 1981 gift from the Hemer family, and remnants of the original 1860s farmstead are still visible along the trails.

  • Trail markers can be sparse — consider downloading a trail map
